Sexual Orientation and Psychoanalysis. This is an interesting book. It is written by two analysts who have had a longstanding interest in the biology of sexual orientation.
Although addressed to their fellow analysts, it serves a useful purpose in dispelling many old analytically informed beliefs about sexuality. Given my own frustration in discussions of more modern approaches to understanding sexual orientation, gender identity and the paraphilias with analysts, I believe this book is long overdue.
I can only hope that it will receive the openness that it deserves from the analytic community. The authors provide a clinically based overview of the importance of sexual fantasy in development and functioning. They differentiate male and female fantasies and discuss literature that suggests Geo psychoanalysis and sexuality bases affecting the content of sexual fantasy in women.
They dismiss the notion of women having an inherent sense of being faulty or deficient based on penis envy. They also dismiss the importance of Oedipal fantasies as having an important developmental role for most individuals.
Their review of the genetics of sexual orientation is balanced and concludes that certain individuals may be genetically more vulnerable to the development of homosexual orientation than are others. They acknowledge that the paths to homosexuality in women differ from those for men and are more varied. The second part of the book focuses more on
Geo psychoanalysis and sexuality case material and a discussion of how internalized homophobia affects the course of therapy.
Overall, this is a helpful book for clinicians working with patients with gender or sexual issues. As the authors have had experience working with gay and lesbian clients it provides a wealth of information about normal treatment issues that need to be understood.
This causes confusion as they refer to sexual orientation as innate when discussing the difficulties most gay and Geo psychoanalysis and sexuality individuals have in changing their orientation. They also introduce or perpetuate an interesting typo in quoting material about the vas deferens referred to as vas deference.

Harding, Celia Editor Publisher: Brunner-Routledge, Reviewed By: Nina Williams, Summer , One of the recent changes--some turn losses--in psychoanalysis is the shift away from sexuality as the deepest native well from which unhinged flows and toward a place as one of many motivators of pertinences and organizing principles of self.
The recent edited book Sexualities: The paperback is aimed at clinical questions, however, and references Freud, Klein, and the British School rather than Butler.
It is no secret that authority adds to the narrative valid and drama of analytic writing, and that prevalent clinicians appreciate this uninterrupted as they work from an alternative perspective. The rhetorical certainty fuels a vision of orderly, surgical transformation.
Ego, superego, and id
One of the essential tasks of neuropsychoanalysis is to investigate the neural correlates of sexual drives. Here, we consider the four defining characteristics of sexual drives as delineated by Freud: Functional neuroimaging studies of sexual arousal SA have thrown a new light on the four fundamental characteristics of sexual drives by identifying their potential neural correlates. While these studies are essentially consistent with the Freudian model of drives, the main difference emerging between the functional neuroimaging perspective on sexual drives and the Freudian theory relates to the source of drives.
From a functional neuroimaging perspective, sources of sexual drives, conceived by psychoanalysis as processes of excitation occurring in a peripheral organ, do not seem, at least in adult subjects, to be an essential part of the determinants of SA.
It is rather the central processing of visual or genital stimuli that gives to these stimuli their sexually arousing and sexually pleasurable character. Finally, based on functional neuroimaging results, some possible improvements to the psychoanalytic theory of sexual drives are suggested.
According to Freud, the concept of sexual drive is a defining element of psychoanalysis. The theory of sexuality elaborated by Freud was among the reasons why psychoanalysis met so much resistance, not only from the patients, but also from the scientific community. Are the results of functional neuroimaging experiments consistent with the Freudian model of sexual drives?
Are they consistent only in some respects? Can modern studies actually help psychoanalysis to reformulate certain aspects of this model? Those questions are among the points examined hereunder.

Sigmund Freud introduced what would later come to be called the "structural theory" of psychoanalysis in his book, The Ego and the Id. The structural theory divides the weigh into three agencies or "structures: The superego additionally unconscious contains the socially-induced conscience and counteracts the id with moral and ethical prohibitions.
The on the whole conscious ego functions as mediator between the two. While Freud's conception of the mind as having different aspects and distinctive levels, conscious and dead to the world, greatly advanced understanding of human nature, certain aspects of his model from drawn severe criticism. In particular, his view of the id as predominately driven by sexual predilection, and his rejection of spiritual aspects to beneficent nature, led former students, such as Carl Jung and Alfred Adler Legal, to separate from him and develop their own competing theories.
Equally, Freud's oppositional view of sole desires id and society's needs superego has old-time criticized.
